Administrative Leadership Team Challenge - Diversity and Inclusion (Team)
As an administrative leadership team, you have looked at many different aspects of managing a school and planning for educational success. You have analyzed data to develop instructional goals and an intervention, revised and reworked a budget, considered resource allocation, planned for technology, and identified ways to involve the community in your plans. This week, you will build upon your learning, and focus on how to develop a positive school culture that welcomes every member of the school community. By developing a statement of diversity and inclusion and identifying a plan to put your statement into action, you will continue to steward your vision and contribute to achieving your instructional goal.
Administrative Leadership Team Challenge:
Work with your team to develop a statement of diversity and inclusion that respects, responds to, and thrives on the diversity in your school and community. Develop a plan for fostering a culture of inclusion.
Directions
The Facilitator should create a new thread in the team discussion forum entitled Week 7: Diversity and Inclusion.
Review the sample diversity and inclusion statements located in the callout box on the right. Contribute at least one diversity statement to share with your team, either from your school, or one that you have found through an Internet search. Discuss responses to the questions below:
How is diversity defined? What represents a diverse population?
As you review examples of diversity statements, what are the elements that are consistently represented? To what extent do you think these statements are effective? Why or why not?
Use the prompts below to guide the next portion of your team discussion in response to the team challenge:
What diversity exists in your school community?
How will your team form a diversity committee that represents all stakeholders and subgroups within the school community? Who needs to be a part of this committee? How would you invite members outside of the school to participate?
How will your team ensure that the decisions of this committee are consistent with the school’s vision?
How will you communicate your diversity statement to stakeholders?
What steps would you take to establish and foster a positive school culture that celebrates diversity? How would you manage the school culture?
With your team, make a plan for what you will do regularly to foster a culture of inclusion, and identify specific action items that would occur in the natural cycle of a school calendar. Think about discipline policies or behavior interventions, interaction with students, expectations, partnering with families and the community, professional development, communication with staff, etc.
How do these steps/activities connect to or support your school goal?
What are some considerations for equitable access to technology at your school? How will you promote digital equity?
By midnight Monday, your team should come to consensus on a statement of diversity and inclusion, as well as a plan with action steps for fostering an inclusive community that welcomes every member. Note, if a diversity statement already exists for your school, your statement may be a revision to the current statement.
The team’s Reporter should post your team’s response in a clearly labeled thread in your team discussion forum.
Next week, you will work independently on Part 6 of your Administrative Action Plan. You will also pull together your entire Administrative Action Plan into a cohesive research paper.
Administrative Action Plan - Part 5 (Individual)
Last week, your administrative leadership team developed a technology plan. For Part 5 of your Administrative Action Plan, you will summarize and describe this technology plan, making sure to address all six of the essential elements. You will also support the rationale for your team’s decisions. To support your ideas, you will integrate research and practice by citing articles from the Resource Library that focus on integrating technology.
Directions:
Read the Administrative Action Plan Part 5 directions. Also, carefully review theAdministrative Action Plan Rubric to gain an understanding of how your plan will be scored at the end of the course.
Complete Part 5 of your Administrative Action Plan, focusing on technology planning.
Post your completed Administrative Action Plan Part 5 to the appropriate section of the Gradebook by the end of the week.
You will receive feedback from your instructor on Part 5. You will have the opportunity to revise this part before submitting your final plan at the end of the course.
